Baptism
Chalmers-Wesley Church celebrates the sacrament of Baptism as God’s initiative and our response. Baptism flows from God’s unmerited grace and pours out in lives of gratitude and commitment. As initiation into the Church, baptism is an act of welcoming, blessing, and belonging.
In his baptism, Jesus received the Holy Spirit and was declared God’s beloved, he opened himself to repentance and forgiveness, and he marked a new beginning in his ministry. In our baptism we are similarly claimed, called, and commissioned.
Our baptismal identity is both individual and communal. Baptism honors the diversity of individuals and challenges us to be a community of equals.
Baptism is the sole rite of initiation into full membership in the Christian community.
One of the key elements in The Celebration of Baptism is a declaration of faith made by the candidate or on their behalf when the candidate is an infant. Baptism includes:
- a profession of faith in the triune God,
- a commitment to seek justice and resist evil,
- a commitment to follow the way of Jesus Christ and
- a commitment to the mission and ministry of the Church
Sponsors, Godparents, and Mentors
“Sponsors” or “mentors” may be designated. Their role is to participate in the celebration itself.
Congregational Participation
The congregation is an integral participant in the process of Christian initiation.
Baptism at Chalmers-Wesley
Our minister will be pleased to begin the process of baptism for you or your children. We offer couples baptismal resources, usually by email, which are used in preparing the service. Our resources are bilingual. Due to the wide variety of choice offered, each service will be unique. In this way the service becomes your own.
At some point during the preparation the minister will make a recommendation regarding the baptism to the Session of Chalmers-Wesley. It is worth noting, the Session has never turned down a recommendation for baptism from the minister.
