The United Church of Canada celebrates its 85th Anniversary!
On Sunday, June 20, at 5:00 pm, a special multilingual service will take place at Metropolitan United Church in Toronto. The celebration, in which people from all of Canada will participate live by video-conference, will be broadcast direct on the internet at the following address: <http://ucc85.blogspot.com/>
You can visit this site now to see how the live-online “Country Wide Liturgy” will be organized using modern technology. The Reverend Darla Sloan of Église unie Saint-Pierre will be co-presiding the web-cast service with Michael Blair, executive minister of the Communities in Mission Unit of the General Council office.

The following is an excerpt from our history book, “Remember all the Way:”

“The United Church was inaugurated on June 10, 1925 in Toronto, Ontario, when the Methodist Church of Canada, the Congregational Union of Canada and 70% of the Presbyterian Church in Canada entered into an organic union. Joining as well was the small General Council of Union Churches, centered largely in Western Canada. The First General Council was held in Toronto’s Mutual Street Arena, where 347 men and three women, commissioners representing the various denominations, signed the Basis of Union.
The long and rocky road that led to the union of these diverse Protestant denominations across Canada had begun at the time of Confederation.
The story is well told by John Webster Grant in his book, The Canadian Experience of Church Union.   Union had almost been accomplished by 1915, but was delayed by the First World War and growing Presbyterian opposition. Following the war, the idea was taken up again with renewed vigor. Grant described the atmosphere that prevailed in 1925:
'Church union suddenly seemed not only an appropriate but a practical and even urgent response to the Canadian challenge…. Canadians saw in their new cosmopolitanism the possibility of erecting in their land the microcosm of a Christian world. Only let the Churches unite, it was often urged, and their influence for reconciliation and righteousness would be irresistible. Missionary zeal and patriotism alike called for a Church that would be larger, more comprehensive and more Canadian than any denomination then in existence.'”

In Quebec City, both Chalmers Free Presbyterian Church and the Wesleyan Methodist Church became part of the newly-formed denomination. In 1931, the congregation of Wesley United church decided to merge with Chalmers United, thus creating Chalmers-Wesley United Church.

Happy Birthday to all members of the United Church of Canada!

Some of you have already given Carol Bircher your name for our guest list, and hopes she’ll hear from many others in the next few days. We’d love to have you with us. You can drop Carol an e-mail at <5cents@videotron.ca> or phone her at (418) 657-2574. The Café de Paris is located at 66 rue St-Louis, within easy walking distance of Chalmers-Wesley.

The Fund-Raising Steering Committee meets on Friday, April 16 at 9:30am.

Last Sunday evening’s Sing-Along Messiah was a great success! Some fifty singers lustily and joyfully sang selections of Handel’s beloved “Messiah” for almost three hours and listened to soloists Michelle Fountaine and Philippe Gagné perform selected arias and recitatives.  Although attendees were fewer in number than last year, they were very generous with their free-will donations and two of the invited professional musicians returned their honorarium payments thus reducing our costs. Hallelujah!
