PS: I recently received the following message from a friend and thought I'd share it with you:
- “The thought of 2012 amazes me. I still remember, vividly, the 2000 millennium scare, that all our computers would die. That went along with people thinking it was the start of, rather than the end of, a millennium Then we had dire predictions for 2011. And, now, with impressive calculations, some say the world will end this coming August! IF any of this be true (and that’s a might big IF . . .), much may depend on us, so let us make the best we can, faithfully, hopefully and lovingly.”

Getting to know the Reverend James (Jim) de Burgh Wetherall, DTh.

In the above photo are: Brent Montgomery, member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Valcartier, and member of the Joint Search Committee; Rev. James Potter, Chair of Quebec-Sherbrooke Presbytery; Rev. Dr. James de Burgh Wetherall, newly-covenanted minister of Chalmers-Wesley United Church, Quebec City; Rev. Doug Stewart, Ottawa-Montreal Conference supervisor; and David Bircher, member of Chalmers-Wesley United Church and the Joint Search Committee.
The congregations of Chalmers-Wesley United Church (Quebec City), St. Andrew’s United Church and St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church (Valcartier) were delighted to officially welcome their new minister, James de Burgh Wetherall (or Rev. Jim, as he asks us to call him), at a Covenanting Service which was held on November 6, 2011.
Reverend Jim arrived in Quebec City the first week of September and has been busy getting settled in since then. Aside from leading Sunday morning worship services at Chalmers-Wesley and the two St. Andrew’s (he alternates between the United and Presbyterian Churches each week) in Valcartier Village, one of his major preoccupations for the past two months was finding a place to live. Happily, that situation has now been resolved and he can now focus all of his attention on the congregations of these three churches in two communities which are some 35 kilometers distance from each other.
We are delighted to have him as our new minister after a “drought” of almost five years. We hope he will be as delighted to be here after getting to know us better. I interviewed Rev. Jim on Friday, November 18, and wish to share the following with you so you too will realize what a wonderful pastor this man is.
Part of his mission is to help rebuild the congregation which has declined in numbers in recent years. He said, “It takes effort to get them but it can happen. I saw this years ago when there was a pronounced decline in England. If you can get their attention, their interest, desire and decision, you can get them to come to church.”
Born in County Armagh, Northern Ireland, Rev. Wetherall’s parents were practicing Christians who would start every day with a scripture reading, a hymn and a prayer. He was the youngest of eight children - four boys and four girls. He attended a Quaker Christian School in Lisburn near Belfast. “In that school they had a one hour Bible study every day and that gave me a very sympathetic interest in Christian things.” His father was a dental surgeon. Sadly, both his parents died when he was in his early teens.
“My parents had a very high standard. They felt we should be at all the church services, twice on Sunday and Sunday School, and also be in the youth group, Christian Endeavour, which met during the week.” When he finished high school, he joined up with Taylor McAfee and Jim Wilson, and they set out to try to revive declining churches in Northern Ireland and England. “Taylor McAfee was musically superb. We built a trailer and bought a Jeep in Northern Ireland and sailed to Lancashire, England, as itinerant preachers.”
Their first stop was in a community called Whittle Le Woods where the villagers welcomed them with open arms as they’d been praying that someone would come and help them revive their declining congregation. They held Evangelical meetings each weekday evening in the local Methodist Church. They stayed there for seven weeks, and people came to services every night.
They did not ask for donations, but people provided them with fresh food, produce and other necessities so they could continue their missionary work, attempting to bring people back to churches that had declined. They eventually moved on to other villages and they did this for three years all over England and Northern Ireland. The longest they ever stayed in any one church was eleven weeks. They did this all year round, camping out in their trailer, it being a milder climate there than in Canada.
Sadly, Taylor McAfee died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 30 and Jim Wilson and Jim Wetherall were unable to continue without him and his wonderful music to attract people to their meetings.
Rev. Wetherall came to Canada hoping to study at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, but he came to Toronto instead because his brother was living there. He studied at the United Church’s Victoria University which was near Central Seminary in Toronto where he earned degrees in Arts, Theology and Psychology. After that he attended Fuller Theological Seminary, a California school which had a branch in Winona Lake, Indiana, and earned a Master of Theology. He went from there to Basel, Switzerland, and earned a Doctorate of Theology.
The name ‘de Burgh’ came from his grandmother who was from Lausanne, Switzerland. His wife, Evelyn, is also Swiss. Before studying in Switzerland, Wetherall was on a bicycle tour of Europe with a friend and he met his future wife’s mother at a tramway stop and ended up meeting her daughter and being invited home for dinner. This led to his friendship with Evelyn.
After earning his Doctorate in Theology, he was asked to be a minister of the Cathedral parish in Basel which was a Swiss Reformed Church. His task there was to preach in German which he had learned very quickly while living there.
He came back to Canada and studied at Waterloo Lutheran University in Ontario, taking courses in Philosophy and Psychology. Evelyn, his future wife, came over to Canada and she got a job with World Vision. They soon became engaged and by the end of that year, they returned to Switzerland to be married.
When they came back to Canada, St. Jacob’s interdenominational church outside Kitchener, Ontario, asked him to help them and he stayed there for a year or so. Then a congregation in Muskegan, Michigan, asked him to come to Little Black Lake Church, where he stayed for two years. Evening services were broadcast live and direct on the radio. There were not many people in Black Lake in the winter months which gave him plenty of time for study and writing. After that, he came back to Toronto and started to travel, holding meetings in various churches, Sunday to Wednesday, for seven years.
In the fall of 1990, Rev. Wetherall was invited to West Ellesmere United Church in Toronto to fill in for two months and he ended up staying for 20 years. United Church said “Yes,” he could be called as their minister but as he had not been ordained in the United Church, he’d have to be re-ordained, so he took five courses at Emmanuel College to be familiar with the rules and regulations of the UCC.
During the time that he was in Toronto, whenever he saw that Chalmers-Wesley United Church in Quebec City was looking for a new minister he wanted to say he was available, but he couldn’t as he was too committed to Ellesmere Church. But after 20 years, he saw the ad again and he wrote to us and after the long process of interviews, etc., he resigned from Toronto and here he is with us today.

News from the Pews - October 19/11

Please join us for worship this Sunday, October 23 at 11:15 a.m. as our minister Dr. James DeBurgh Wetherall continues with the second of a series of five sermons on health entitled “How to Live Longer and Look Younger.”
“Many people are not aware of how much is written about health and healing. Those who attend will learn that prayer changes us, and makes it possible for God to heal us – to give us what He wanted to give us, but our attitude has been wrong. It will be explained that by changing our thinking, making it positive instead of negative, we awaken the sleeping energies within us that influence how we look and how we live.
Those attending will learn the place of pardon in health – received and practiced; how our thinking becomes creative, enabling us to live with vim, vigour and vitality. See that by discovering divine Love, the journey to finding the best and the most of the best begins.” -
All are welcome to join us for a time for fellowship and refreshments in the lower hall after the service.
